Projects You Can Do At Home
Are you looking for some fun and easy projects that you can do with your
kids at home?
Here are some
of my favorites!
Watercolor
and Crayon Resist Pictures:
Did you
know that if you color something hard enough with a wax crayon you will
not be able to paint on top of it? That is because the wax on the
crayon resists the watercolor paint. This technique is one of my
favorites and can create some really beautiful works of art. *Try drawing lots of different kinds of fish
and painting the background blue.
*...or draw a butterfly with symmetrical
patterns on it's wings. Then paint the rest of the wings with watercolor
paint.
*...for younger students, have them practice
drawing many kinds of lines with crayon, then paint the shapes between
the lines with bright colors.
* Be creative... what else could you do with
watercolor and crayon resist?
Tissue Paper
Collage - Fall Leaf or Elmer the Elephant
Collaging tissue paper
is a fun, easy way to teach kids about color mixing. As kids overlap
different colors they can see the new colors begin to form.
To
create a tissue paper collage cut small pieces of tissue paper in
many different colors. Mix Elmer's Glue and water together to
get a thin milky liquid. Using a paint brush, paint an area of
your large white paper with glue mixture. Lay pieces of tissue
paper onto the glue area. To make sure the tissue paper is
sticking, paint the glue on top of the tissue paper. After the
entire paper is covered allow it to dry over night. You can use
your tissue paper collage to make many things... A Fall Leaf, Elmer
the Elephant, Stained Glass... the choice is up to you!
Self Portraits
When I was growing up my
mother had me do a self portrait every year and she saved each one
of them. It is so much fun to look back at those pictures and
see how I progressed from age 2 to where I am now! Self
Portraits can be done using a mirror, or without for younger
kids. Let young children feel free to express themselves with
color and try to not guide their drawings too much. It is
important for them to develop naturally, and they will enjoy looking at
their self portrait someday when they are older!
